Here's the engine at 17,000 miles, right after being cleaned (it was pretty dirty!). I used S-100, a motorcycle cleaner that is detergent based and supposedly safe for all finishes (no horrible smell like Gunk Engine Degreaser, either). Just spray it on the cool engine and hose it off, then towel dry and drive a few miles. I didn't cover anything while cleaning the engine, and the car started right up and ran fine.
